"...I pray to God that I don't get sick because I can't afford to go to the doctor...".

What it means to live with this disease.

As I understand it, the immune system is responsible for generating antibodies that defend the body, but when you have lupus it turns out that these antibodies get confused and attack the body itself.

For me, having lupus has often been about coping:

  1. Out of normal blood values in haemoglobin, platelets, white blood cells, creatinine and others. I am always having blood tests to control these values. Although lately this has not been possible due to the economic situation.
  2. Conditions I have to take care of any bites or scratches so that they don't get infected and it takes a long time to heal. I have to take care of any bites or scratches so that they don't get infected and it takes a long time for them to heal. I can't sunbathe much. Imagine, I live on a beautiful island with beautiful beaches and sun everywhere. Of course, when I was young I would sometimes wear sunscreen and always stay in the shade, but I haven't been able to do that for a long time.
  3. Discomfort in the bones, especially in the wrists, fingers, toes and knees; sometimes cramps, sometimes pains, sometimes tightness and I have to massage them for a long time to get them back to normal.
  4. Any illness you face takes longer to cure, even a common cold. Plus I can't just take any medicine.

I have also had inflammation of the kidneys and liver, this was difficult until I was put on chemotherapy with endosan for 3 years (this was in 2010).

When I was younger I could resist more and play hard to get, but as time went by my body became weaker and it is harder to cope with the disease.

I still have to work, I can't stop doing it and with the situation in my country (Venezuela) everything is complicated; besides, this illness also has to do with mood and stress because it affects the organism.

Anyway, I am almost 50 years old and I was 17 years old when I was diagnosed, I have lived with my illness for more than half of my life but in reality I cannot complain, the first years were not so hard because I had more possibilities to control it since it was possible to buy the medicines, do the tests and go to the doctor. But in the last few years I have simply not been able to, not because of carelessness but because I don't have the resources; I feel so helpless, it is out of my hands and I can't do anything but pray to God and the Virgin not to complicate things for me.
