Diagnosis:
Systemic lupus erythematosus glomerulonephritis syndrome, World Health Organization class V (disorder)
Spanish:
Glomerulonephritis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus, World Health Organisation class V (disorder)
Description
Inflammation of the basement membrane of the renal glomerulus (filtration unit of the kidney), associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and characterised by significant protein loss in the urine.
Explanation
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is an autoimmune disease, diseases in which the defence system produces antibodies against elements of the individual's own tissues. This union of the antibodies and cells of the tissues of the carrier of the disease generates complex molecules called immuno-complexes that usually circulate in the blood and usually lodge in the filtration organ par excellence, which is the kidney, affecting it. Depending on the type of involvement detectable in the kidneys of patients with Lupus, the type of kidney lesion is classified.
Specifically in this type of class V lesion, the immuno-complexes are trapped by the basement membrane of the kidney filtering unit, thickening it and altering its permeability to various substances including proteins.
